Reef Keepers Aquariums in Clayton, North Carolina has carved out a reputation as a serious destination for saltwater hobbyists — the kind of place people drive 45 minutes or even five hours from West Virginia to visit. Owner Bill has been in the business for years, and his experience shows in the quality of livestock he stocks. Reviewers consistently praise the Euphyllia corals, calling them stunning in both beauty and health, and the store's namesake reef inventory is clearly its strongest draw.
A six line wrasse and live rock purchase reported by one customer was thriving, a testament to the sourcing philosophy Bill is known for: bringing in the best stock from the best suppliers rather than flipping questionable fish. But Reef Keepers isn't exclusively saltwater. The store carries a solid selection of freshwater fish and aquatic plants, with multiple customers noting the variety of live plants available and the visible impact they made on their home tanks.
The shop also stocks larger, more mature fish — a rarity among local fish stores that typically only carry juveniles. One family who couldn't get aquarium tickets found their son equally delighted browsing the displays. The consultation side of the business is notable.
Staff — particularly Bill and Kevin — have spent 20 to 30 minutes walking newcomers through tank setup basics, suggesting outside resources, and troubleshooting existing problems. Several reviewers credit the team with helping them recover struggling tanks. It should be noted that the store has drawn sharp criticism from some customers regarding customer service interactions and issues with premixed saltwater.
A few reviewers reported tense exchanges, and one lost livestock after receiving freshwater instead of saltwater. The store's product range for saltwater dry goods has also been described as limited by at least one visitor. For hobbyists in the Clayton and greater Raleigh area seeking quality corals, healthy saltwater fish, and live rock from someone deeply invested in the trade, Reef Keepers remains a compelling stop — just come prepared to engage and ask questions.

Went in with my daughter as we are considering getting her a fish tank and I know nothing about fish. These guys are very knowledgeable and helpful. Talked with them for about 20-30 mins and they answered everything I thought to ask them and also suggested some other helpful resources for us to look into for us to learn more on our own time. Would highly recommend going to check them out!

If I could give this place ZERO stars I absolutely would. The older guy who I assume is the owner is beyond rude....just an unfriendly person. My boyfriend and I have been doing all 3 of our tanks using their business for supplies, fish, and plants. We've had overpriced equipment break, aquatic life sick. I went one day when the card reader was down and the old man there acted so annoyed that I was standing there waiting so I just left. The cherry on top, and the reason they will no longer receive a dime from us is when we purchased a Ramshorn snail about 5 days ago. We could immediately tell that it was dead. The front of the shell was almost transparent, meaning he had been dead a while. Should have been VERY obvious when the man scooped it out of the tank to sell it. But whatever. Put the snail in the tank, and there is sat, dead for a couple of days. When my boyfriend called to ask them what he should do with the dead thing, he was blamed and told he just didn't know what he was talking about and that the snail was alive. I have been a snail enthusiast for years and know what a dead snail looks like. Every day for 5 days I said "this snail is dead". Finally, my bf took the snail back only to be greeted by a younger employee. He again basically called my boyfriend an idiot and said that the snail was alive when we got it (again, there wasn't much a snail left in there. I'm sure it was eaten by another snail in the store's tank). All that being said, they need to care more about their freshwater life and most of all, work on their customer service. Not everyone going in there is a novice and the owners/employees don't know as much as they think they do. You're better off buying from Petsmart and Petco. Avoid this place at all costs.
