Village Pet & Supplies on the south side of Carlsbad, New Mexico, is the kind of independent pet shop that sparks strong opinions. Owner Vicky runs what is essentially a one-woman operation stocked with a surprisingly wide variety of animals — freshwater fish, bearded dragons, ball pythons, boas, leopard geckos, guinea pigs, exotic birds including a macaw, snakes, ferrets, turtles, and even puppies like Chihuahuas and Yorkies. For a small desert town with limited shopping options, the sheer range of live animals and pet supplies under one roof is notable.
On the freshwater side, the store carries guppies and other community fish, along with tanks, water treatments, heating lights, cage décor, and animal feed. One reviewer from Roswell drove over specifically for male guppies and praised the staff's attentiveness in netting the exact fish requested and offering transit advice for the long drive home. Vicky has a loyal following — multiple customers describe her as personable, patient, and willing to go the extra mile, including holding a purchased pet until Christmas morning.
However, the store's reputation is sharply divided. A significant number of reviewers report persistent issues with cleanliness, ventilation (no air conditioning in the New Mexico heat), and animal health. Reports of dead fish left in tanks or on shelves, bearded dragons with tail rot and metabolic bone disease, and animals sold already sick appear across reviews spanning many years.
One longtime Carlsbad resident noted conditions hadn't changed in over fifteen years. Several customers describe being followed around the store or encountering unwelcoming attitudes. The reality is that Village Pet & Supplies fills a gap in Carlsbad's retail landscape — it's one of the few local options for pet supplies and live animals without ordering online.
Vicky clearly has dedicated fans who appreciate her knowledge and friendliness. But prospective buyers, especially of reptiles and small animals, should inspect any animal carefully before purchase and be prepared for potential veterinary needs. For basic freshwater fish supplies and food, the store can serve as a functional local resource.

Don't know why these people have a chip on their shoulder towards blue collar workers in Carlsbad. Walked in to spend money was followed around by what appeared to be family members/ owners, including obnious kids that had to be reprimanded. After being treated like a thief for couple minutes, I felt strongly enough to let yall know I'll never be back and hope others read this.

It’s a filthy store that smells bad, no fresh air, the animals look sad and the big turtles are cold with no heat source.

I can’t say the shop is the worst but their not the best. The owner has more pets than she can properly care for and I’ve known several people to volunteer to help just so the animals have some quality of life. The shop isn’t always clean and neat but like I said over worked/loaded with animals. Definitely outdated and wish the owner could do more for the animals. Not their fault. Wouldn’t recommend adopting an animal unless your ready for a hearty vet bill or want to rehabilitate. Have seen things from dead fish in tanks, to ferrets with HORRID bubble foot. I recommend as a pet supply for a last resort. Living in small towns etc makes it hard for the community to get quality stuff without using Amazon or ordering a specific product.

The owner was very nice. The place was very clean and well kept. You could tell that the animals were very well cared for.

Store states they close at 6, got there 5:33 and already closed.

My experience was fine but the animal care and environment that the animals are living in is absolutely awful and some birds have way to small of cages to be living In, and while being in the store I found a few dead fish laying on the rims of shelves, and I found a deceased Guinea pig in the garbage which is a serious health issue for both people and animals.
