Tucked away on Palmer Street in Missoula, Blue Reef is the kind of independent fish store that inspires loyalty bordering on devotion — customers regularly drive two hours just to shop here rather than gamble on online orders. Owner Travis Homme runs the operation with a hands-on intensity that's evident the moment you walk in. The tanks are immaculate, the livestock is healthy, and the coral selection is remarkable, much of it fragged and grown by Travis himself before it hits the sales floor.
The saltwater side of Blue Reef is where things really shine. Reef hobbyists will find an impressive spread of corals alongside quality saltwater fish, and Travis has guided countless customers through the process of setting up their first reef systems — from choosing the right sump configuration to troubleshooting equipment failures. He makes house calls, too, which is nearly unheard of for a shop this size.
Freshwater enthusiasts aren't an afterthought, though. Blue Reef stocks a solid variety of freshwater fish and live plants, and the Amano shrimp come in healthy and ready to work. One detail that sets this store apart is the RO water station — multiple reviewers credit it with transforming their tanks from cloudy disappointments to crystal-clear showcases.
Travis also makes his own frozen fish food in-house alongside commercial frozen options, and customers report their fish going wild for the homemade blends. What makes Blue Reef genuinely special in the Missoula aquarium scene is the consultation that comes free with every visit. Travis doesn't gatekeep information.
He'll tell you exactly what's going wrong with your water chemistry, recommend specific fixes, and follow up. Newcomers describe him as the person who made the hobby accessible to them, while experienced hobbyists appreciate his willingness to stay current rather than relying on outdated practices. The store has earned a near-perfect rating across 70 reviews in a market that desperately needed a serious fish shop, and it delivers.

Bought three Amano shrimp here a few months ago, they settled in immediately, and took no time to start devouring all the biofilm in my tank. It is rare to find an aquarium store owner who cares so much about the quality and long-term success of their fish! Best in the Northwest!

Great store with huge selection of both freshwater and saltwater fish and an amazing selection of corals! Travis has been a huge help getting my tank on track, his knowledge and passion for the hobby is inspiring. It is well worth the 2 hour drive for me to go get exactly what I want instead of constant online orders that rarely survive the shipping.

Skip the big box stores and go right to this guy. Actually knows what he's doing and has the patience to answer any question you might have. His advice has helped me greatly in the hobby. Fish and corals are all very healthy and look great. Whether you need some livestock, dry goods, or help with a problem he's your guy.

5 stars isn't enough for Blue Reef! I'm relatively new to the aquarium hobby, and I was totally clueless when I first walked in. Travis at Blue Reef took me under his wing and helped me set up my tank. His expertise with both fresh and saltwater fish is impressive, but it's the level of support he provides that really sets him apart. From guiding me through minor adjustments to saving my tank from major equipment failures, Travis has been an invaluable resource. The selection of saltwater life at Blue Reef is incredible, and the quality of the fish is top-notch. If you're looking for a knowledgeable and supportive team to help you navigate the world of aquariums, look no further than Blue Reef. Thanks, Travis - you're the real MVP!

The owner is truly passionate and knowledgable. He sells frozen fish food, and makes his own too! I bought one of his homemade packs and my fish went absolutely nuts for it. All of his stock is always in great health. He sell freshwater plants too! I dont know much about saltwater, but he has a ton of stock on that side of things as well.

"The fish guy," as my kids like to call him is a great resource for anyone in to reefing. He's been very helpful from the beginning for us. I highly recommend paying him a visit if you're looking to get a reef system set up, need a hand with your current system or are just looking to purchase coral or fish. We visit this shop often.
