We purchased an adorable dachshund today and I am so happy to have him. He’s a great addition to our little family. The worker Alex helped us with the whole experience and truly made the experience 10x better. You can tell she really cares about who these animals go home with. Thank you Alex and Petland of making my dreams of owning a dachshund come true

We purchased a puppy from Petland on June 23, 2025, for $3,500. Petland provided us with paperwork stating the puppy was healthy. However, less than four days later, on the morning of June 27th, she had to be hospitalized due to an underlying health condition that Petland failed to disclose. She has remained hospitalized since the 27th, and we still do not know when — or if — she will be able to come home. To make matters worse, Petland has been no help throughout this ordeal and has refused to compensate us in any way for the veterinary costs or our emotional distress. We have already invested in supplies and made an emotional commitment to a puppy we were assured was healthy, only to face heartbreaking uncertainty. Based on our experience, I cannot recommend Petland. Their lack of transparency, unwillingness to take responsibility, and apparent disregard for the wellbeing of the animals they sell is deeply concerning. I uploaded a picture of our sweet Missy when we took her home.

Please help stop this from happening to anyone else. My sweet puppy, born 2/24/23 and purchased from Petland in O'Fallon, was recently diagnosed with Hurler's Syndrome (MPS I), a rare and devastating genetic condition, where both parents carry a detectable, recessive gene. According to Petland paperwork, she was bred by Kevin Street in Bowling Green, MO. This disease causes progressive pain and deformity, and there is no cure. Watching her struggle daily—with cloudy, painful eyes, floppy limbs, and difficulty breathing (she had to have parts of her tongue and palette surgically removed)—is heartbreaking beyond words. It took six veterinarians and multiple surgeries just to get a diagnosis. She’s only two years old, and already her quality of life is declining. We were told this condition is genetic and preventable through simple cheek-swab testing of the parents. Yet no such testing was disclosed or provided. We trusted Petland because of their claims of breeder vetting and formal registration. But the signs a neglectful breeder were there—like her eating her own feces as a baby, which may indicate poor early conditions and lack of attention. The symptoms of a genetic condition due to bad breeding may not begin to show until after 6 months. A refund or replacement can never undo this pain. This should not be happening. If you’re considering buying a puppy, please ask for genetic testing documentation. Demand transparency. And if you’re in a position to influence breeding practices or retail policies—please act. No family should have to watch their beloved pet suffer like this. It may be helpful to consult a vet to find a breeder that is actually responsible.
