## About

Tucked away in Three Rivers, Michigan, Great Lakes Aquarium House is the kind of cash-only, mom-and-pop fish store that's becoming increasingly rare in southwest Michigan — and the kind worth driving an hour to visit. The shop is small, almost deceptively so, but the variety packed into its space consistently surprises first-time visitors. Owner Chuck has built a loyal following over decades, earning a reputation as someone who will tell you the truth about your tank setup even if it's not what you want to hear. He won't sell you a fish if the conditions aren't right for it, and that uncompromising ethic is exactly why customers keep coming back.

The freshwater selection is the star here. Chuck stocks plecos that reviewers say are hard to find anywhere else — unusual varieties you won't see at chain stores — alongside angelfish, tropical species, frogs, snails, and a solid shrimp selection. Live plants are noticeably cheaper than big box competitors, and the frozen fish food selection, including Omega One products, draws dedicated hobbyists. Chuck will also special order fish you can't find on his racks.

Pond keepers have found help here too. One customer came in thinking they needed bottom-feeding fish for a pond problem, and Chuck diagnosed it as an organic oxygen issue requiring aquatic plants instead — the kind of practical, experience-driven advice that defines this shop. Water testing and honest consultation come standard with every visit.

The tanks are consistently described as clean, the fish healthy and well-sourced. Prices run at or below average for the hobby, which is remarkable for a small independent operation. Chuck's personality — described by multiple reviewers as "a character" and "literally a fish in a human's body" — makes every visit feel more like a conversation with a passionate friend than a retail transaction. Just remember: bring cash.

> Great small town, mom and pop aquarium shop. The owner is a character and knows his stuff. They provide very clean, well sourced fish and decades of aquarium knowledge and are uncompromising on what they keep and sell for a reason (but will order you whatever you want). Best prices on fish I've seen by far as well.

> They are on top of service and informative. Fish are an expensive hobby, of course. Prices seem average or below the average, mostly. They took our measurements for a lid for our tank but ordered the wrong size anyway. We bought a pleco for our 55 gal tank that already houses, happily, one small gold fish, 5 daneos, snails, plants and one minnow...all thriving. Pleco died the first night. Maybe just small and stressed. Hope for a fair return on our lid and replacement for our fish. They asked for the fish and samples of our water. 🤞

Editing to a 1 star. They did not take the lids back even though they were just a generic size that could easily be returned. Our 2 plecos from them died but the 2 plecos we got from Meijer are still alive and thriving.

> I was sold fish with ick. The owners are pretty friendly but I would be careful with the things they tell you. They told me just about any fish prefers brackish water including bettas. Two of my tanks got ick from them. I will never be returning it’s turned into the absolute worst experience will be spreading the word about how this place gives out ick
