## About

Beltway Aquarium in Waldorf, Maryland is the kind of place that divides the fishkeeping community right down the middle — and that's part of its identity. This cramped, overstuffed shop specializes in predatory fish and large cichlids, particularly South American species, and has become a go-to destination for hobbyists seeking unusual specimens that simply don't show up at chain stores. An almost two-foot alligator gar? They'll take it in. Monster fish crammed into towering tanks that nearly reach the ceiling? That's the vibe.

The store's strongest suit is its selection. Reviewers consistently mention hard-to-find species alongside staples like discus (priced from $25.99 to $35.99 depending on size), angelfish, clownfish loaches, polar blue parrots, and plecos. If you're hunting for something predatory, rare, or just plain big, Beltway probably has it somewhere behind that algae-coated glass. The freshwater inventory dominates, though saltwater species like clownfish have been spotted on occasion.

Then there's the human element. Robin, the store's beloved manager, earns near-universal praise for her fish knowledge and straight-shooting personality. Customers tip her, seek her out by name, and credit her with making the experience worthwhile. The owner, Richard, is a more polarizing figure — deeply knowledgeable according to some, but described as brusque and unwelcoming by others. Multiple reviewers note there's no return policy on dead fish, a sore point for customers who've lost discus or angelfish within days of purchase.

Let's be honest about the conditions: the store is cluttered, the aisles are tight, and many tanks run murky with algae or tannin-stained water. Some visitors have reported seeing dead fish floating and roach problems. The shop notably lacks live plants, modern lighting, nano fish, and fertilizers — a frustration for planted tank enthusiasts.

Beltway Aquarium isn't trying to be a showroom. It's a scrappy, old-school fish shop that rewards experienced hobbyists willing to look past the aesthetics and dig through the inventory for something special.

> I have to say I was a bit skeptical at first after reading reviews but I bought a clownfish loach about 2 years ago from here and it’s still growing and healthy, I’ve purchased other clownfish loaches from PetSmart and Petco and they usually die within 3 months. They have hardy fish I highly recommended the clownfish loaches from this location and they are a lot bigger than the ones you get from PetSmart. I will be going back soon to get a few to keep my loach in a group.

> The owner was willing to take in an almost 2 foot long alligator gar after my 300 gallon started to leak. Very nice people. They have a good selection of fish as well at reasonable prices.

Some of these bad reviews are making me laugh a bit. I've never been in a aquarium shop that isn't cramped and smelly... it's part of the fun. Also, shop owners will typically always have a bit of an attitude, they're sick of answering stupid questions😂 He's a nice guy. If you're expecting all of the tanks to be crystal clear, go to the baltimore aquarium ur not in there to look at all the pretty fishies... ive been in the hobby for 10+ years the fish looked healthy to me-- the ones I bought are doing fine. The places that keep all the algae off the glass are the same ones that try to charge you 16 bucks for a guppy- ill pass.

If you're actually in the hobby and not just a casual, you'll be able to appreciate this place.

> I love this place ..yes it's crowded and yes it's older but they are the best! Or shall I say ROBIN is the best! Knows her fish stuff! If she offends you ..then you must have issues with someone that tells it like it is ! Have some beautiful fish I've bought from Beltway over the years! Stop by and see for yourself!!!!

> Avoid this place like the plague! They keep these fish in horrible inhabitable conditions. The have a roach infestation. Let’s not forget the worst part… customer service!!! I bought a fish and the fish seemed to have a fungus infection, when I asked the gentleman about it he was very nasty. The fish died the same day I purchased it.

> I just don’t understand how this place stays open. An aquarium store that doesn’t sell live plants, fertilizer, modern lights, nano fish, etc.
