Louisiana Fish Store has become a cornerstone of the Baton Rouge aquarium community, earning a devoted following through hands-on education and a genuine passion for the hobby. Walk in and you'll find a surprisingly deep inventory packed into a compact space — freshwater and saltwater fish, live plants, aquascaping materials like stones and driftwood, filter media, and a full range of equipment and accessories. The selection is broad enough that regulars say if they don't have it, they'll order it.
The freshwater side is where the store really shines. Healthy African cichlids — including mbuna that reviewers note are in notably better condition than at competing shops — share space with oddball species like bumblebee gobies, Pygmy corydoras, red cherry shrimp, guppies, and nerite snails. The planted tank section is robust, with enough variety in live plants and hardscape to satisfy serious aquascapers.
Staff members like John, Danny, Jess, Addy, and Vector are frequently called out by name for their willingness to spend 20 minutes or more walking newcomers through tank cycling, stocking choices, and equipment basics. The owner himself is known for his honesty — he won't push products you don't need and will point you elsewhere if he can't source what you're after. The store also handles bigger projects.
One customer praised their installation of a 300-gallon tank and custom stand, calling it a statement piece in their new home. For beginners, the team provides written cycling instructions and stays accessible via phone and messaging for follow-up questions — a level of after-sale support that's rare in the hobby. Their unboxing videos on social media have become a draw of their own, giving customers a preview of incoming livestock.
Saltwater hobbyists will find stock here too, though the freshwater and planted tank offerings dominate the conversation among reviewers. If you're in the Baton Rouge area and want a local fish store that invests time in your success, Louisiana Fish Store delivers.

John is extremely knowledgeable and honest and if he doesn't have what you want in stock usually he can get it or tell you where to get it and he always tells the honest truth about the products and fish and won't try to sell you anything you don't actually need
