About
Half old-school DVD rental shop, half thriving aquarium store, Movie Vault & PETropoliS is one of the more unforgettable places to buy fish in Lawrenceburg, KY. The owners turned a former movie-rental counter into a livestock destination, and longtime regulars now drive in from as far as Bardstown for stock that goes well beyond big-box basics. Walk the aisles and you'll find walls of freshwater and saltwater tanks: discus, German blue rams, fancy tail guppies, goldfish, and everyday community fish for sale in Lawrenceburg, KY, alongside a genuinely surprising marine section.
That saltwater corner is the showstopper. Recent visitors rave about live coral that practically glows under the lights, an enormous puffer fish, and a growing clam that simply has to be seen in person; ask for the walk-through tour and the staff will happily show you around. If you've been hunting for hard-to-find saltwater fish and coral near me, this is the rare central-Kentucky shop that actually stocks them.
The real draw is the people. Owner Shawn and staff member Mary get named again and again for patient, knowledgeable help. Mary in particular has talked countless hobbyists through ammonia spikes, tank cycling, and the right water chemistry to keep a tank stable and breeding, after they'd struck out everywhere else.
Newer shoppers still single out the owner as friendly and deeply knowledgeable, and first-timers mention being greeted at the door and walked through their whole setup. Beyond fish, PETropoliS carries reptiles like albino milk snakes and crested geckos, small mammals including chinchillas, plus crickets, feeder supplies, and a live bait assortment for local anglers, and yes, a wall of DVDs and Blu-rays for movie night. The livestock selection rotates often, so it's worth asking what just came in.
A few shoppers note the store doesn't guarantee livestock, so it's smart to confirm health and care details before you buy. For anyone in Lawrenceburg, KY who wants more than goldfish and guppies, this aquarium store rewards a slow, curious visit.

— Chloe Overbee5.0a week ago“Have always loved this place, but it has went downhill. Was there today and there was a dead baby chinchilla all squished up from the others stomping on it. It looked completely pitiful and looked like it had been dead for a while. Tons of dead fish everywhere. One tank had over 20 dead fish in it. And they had none of the lights on over top of the aquariums like they were trying to hide how dirty they were.”
— Emily Hope1.02 months ago“Amazing store, great selection. Only place I go anymore. Pet Store & a Movie(DVD/BR) store, just doesn’t get any better. Nice live bait assortment as well.”
— CES CADTECH5.0Edited 3 months ago“The staff was really helpful and probably the best fish store will be going again.”
— Noel Velazquez5.03 months ago“The OG blockbuster movie rental hub you wished still existed. Definitely scavenge the web and thrift stores for dvd players, thirty years of all the cool movies. And the aquariums, by far the coolest selection, and live coral, are you kidding me, they actually glow!! Walk around yourself sure, but ask for the tour and be amazed! Four foot puffer fish, a soon to be seven foot clam, seriously fun. Just don’t touch a blue ring octopus if you see one, it’ll leave you frozen in disbelief. Seriously, fun place to explore. Thanks y’all!!”
