Tucked into Sioux City, Iowa, GroFin Aquatics has quickly earned a devoted following among freshwater hobbyists across the tri-state area, drawing visitors from as far as Sioux Falls and Omaha. This locally owned shop punches well above its modest footprint, with reviewers consistently calling it one of the cleanest fish stores they've ever walked into — pristine tanks, well-organized displays, and a thoughtful layout that includes a dedicated hardscape room stocked with idea-inspiring driftwood and stone pieces. Plants are the clear star here.
GroFin's live plant selection is repeatedly described as incredible, with species that hobbyists typically can only source online. Staff members like Micky, Christian, Taylor, and owner Doug are deeply passionate about planted tanks and readily help customers choose the right species for their setups, whether it's low-light picks for an axolotl tank or a full aquascape build. The quality is evident — customers report thriving, healthy plants that hold up beautifully after purchase.
On the livestock side, GroFin stocks a compelling range of freshwater fish, many of them locally bred. Their guppy and Endler selections get special praise, alongside plecos, shrimp, pufferfish, cichlids, and even North American native darters and sunfish in stunning display tanks. Several reviewers note finding oddball and rare species they'd never encountered in a brick-and-mortar store before.
The shop quarantines fish before selling them, a detail that gives buyers real peace of mind. GroFin is also a go-to destination for Aquarium Co-Op products, including their newer fry food and medicated flakes — items that previously required online ordering for Siouxland hobbyists. Doug's willingness to test water, answer questions at length, and guide newcomers through the learning curve turns first-time visitors into regulars.
The store's combination of rare livestock, exceptional plant inventory, hard-to-find products, and genuinely knowledgeable staff makes it a destination shop for the entire northwest Iowa region.

Jumping in to a planted aquarium, Micky and Christian are friendly knowledgeable and passionate about their job. The quality of fish they have is leaps and bounds above the chain stores in town. Support high quality local shops!!

I like the guidance that you can get, plus being a small business they pretty much just do aquatics, fish, snails, plants ect. I also worry less about bringing something home I don't want mainly a sickness of some kind, they quarantine their fish before saleing them.

Employees are knowledgeable and personable. As a beginner aquarist there is a lot of information and intimidation during the learning process regarding different aquatic plants, animals, and water parameters. They guided us into the right direction and assisted us in building our own ecosystem. The plants were beautiful and thriving. The fish looked healthy and happy. They carry a great variety of plants, shrimp, and fish (even pufferfish which was so exciting to see!) Kids were excited to see many varieties of aquatic life and learn so much. The knowledge, attention, and effort put into this store is evident when you walk in. Will definitely return and opt in for this lovely local spot versus bigger box stores.

This last weekend I discovered that we had a locally owned fish store, I had to check it out, and I wish I would have sooner! The store was very well organized and I was excited to see they carried Aquarium Co - Op products, including the relatively new fry food they came out with. I was happily surprised that they sell medical fish flakes as well. Taylor, I hope got your name right, was an amazing employee to talk for advice for a beginner hobbyist like me. You bet I'll be going back!
