Animal Island Pet Shop in Midlothian, Illinois has been a fixture of the south Chicagoland pet scene for decades, with multiple reviewers citing 10- and 20-year relationships with the store. While it's best known as a multi-species exotic pet destination — reptiles, arachnids, amphibians, and more fill the shop — the freshwater fish department is a serious draw in its own right. Customers specifically call out the extensive selection of cichlids, along with a rotating cast of interesting and exotic freshwater species that keep regulars coming back to see what's new.
The staff is a consistent highlight. Audrey, described as especially knowledgeable about fish, earns praise for her kind demeanor and willingness to help. Kaitlyn (or Caitlyn, depending on the reviewer) gets similar accolades for her expertise.
Jason, the longtime owner, is a familiar face in the area and clearly invested in matching customers with the right animals and supplies. Multiple reviews emphasize that the team doesn't just sell — they educate, patiently answering questions and providing solid care guidance for both new and experienced keepers. The store carries a wide range of supplies for fish and reptiles alike, making it a practical one-stop shop for the Midlothian area.
Prices are described as competitive, and the overall inventory strikes a balance between everyday staples and harder-to-find species. One customer proudly reports a baby green tree python purchased nine years ago that's still thriving — a testament to the quality of stock and the advice that comes with it. It's worth noting that some reviewers have raised concerns about the conditions of feeder rodents and small mammals, so the store isn't without its critics.
But for freshwater fish enthusiasts and exotic pet keepers across the greater Chicago south suburbs, Animal Island has built a loyal following through years of hands-on expertise, fair pricing, and a genuinely diverse inventory that's hard to match in the region.

Horrible pet store… they keep rabbits and Guinea pigs together Lord, knows if they’re feeding them the right food cause Guinea pigs need alot of vitamin C and rabbits don’t cause it gives them diarrhea. They don’t take care of there animals well at all based on there looks only feeding them enough to get by until they are sold….. I hope others report this place for there inhumane animal practices. Especially leaving dead animals in habitats. Where it can make the live animals sick….. very disappointed in this place.

I want to start this off by saying that the store does appear clean and the employees are friendly, they have quite a large selection of all kinds of reptile/amphibian supplies as well as loads of fish stuff. Their reptiles, amphibians and fish looked very well taken care of as they are the primary focus of the shop. They did have rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets as well. There were guinea pigs and rabbits housed together, I'm not sure if this is typical practice or not. They appeared healthy but I didn't get a close look at them. The feeders were heartbreaking, however. Of course with it being focused on animals that feed on rats/mice, you wouldn't expect the rodents to be treated as pets; however they were not housed particularly well. I've seen much worse, but one step above the bottom still isn't great. They had elder rats housed with young rats, all genders in one bin. There was a separate bin for "small" (2-3 week old) rats right above it. I did not see water in either of the bins. There were 20 or so rats in each bin, completely crowded. I picked up one of the small rats who immediately urinated out of fear, but eventually calmed down enough to enjoy being held. Rats are incredibly kind, social, loving animals that deserve basic respect even if being sold as food. It's abhorrent what is being done to these poor animals. The little one I picked up had a horribly sprained ankle, completely swollen and he would not place any weight on it. He also had a URI, like many of the little ones did. Despite this mistreatment, he still snuggled up to me, licked my hands and enjoyed the small bit of peace he'll ever know as I'm sure he'll be dead soon. I'm well aware that this review isn't going to stop anyone from buying feeders - but if you are looking into adopting for pets, PLEASE do not purchase from them. There are plenty of reputable breeders in the Illinois area and surrounding with healthy rats and ethical practices. No living, breathing, sentient animal deserves this kind of treatment, even if you don't value their lives. I wish I could have taken that little one home, but the reality is that every single one of those rats deserves a home and purchasing him would only contribute to the continuation of abuse. They have good reptiles, good reptile supplies. I dont know where they get their stock from. The rodents are awfully cared for.

I’ve been shopping here for a decade and wouldn’t go anywhere else to get pets/supplies. It’s a great store with very friendly and knowledgeable staff. As a reptile person, I particularly appreciate the wide range of reptiles they always have in stock. Every time I go into the place I see something new and interesting. Even more noticeable is how well kept all of their reptiles are. In all my years of shopping here, I’ve never seen an empty water bowl, boring enclosure, or skinny reptile. I highly recommend checking out this store. There is nowhere better in the Chicagoland area!
