Capital Pet Food & Supply has been a family-owned fixture in Country Club Hills, Illinois since the 1980s, and it's the kind of place where the owner will carry a 40-pound bag of dog food to your car and his wife will personally check the stockroom for you. 99 for a 40-lb bag of dog food on the sign out front has been pulling in curious drivers for years — but venture toward the back and you'll find an aquatics section with freshwater fish tanks, including cichlids, along with aquariums and related supplies. The store's bread and butter is pet food: dog food, cat food, bird seed, and specialty items you won't find at big-box retailers, including organic options and brands sourced from smaller producers like a Wisconsin-based dog food line.
Customers drive from as far as Kankakee County to stock up, drawn by prices that consistently undercut chain stores and a product selection that includes supplies for wild birds, parrots, squirrels, and domestic pets of all kinds. There are also some garden and landscape products tucked in. The aquatics section is more modest.
Reviews note that the fish tanks could use better maintenance, and at least one customer reported losing a cichlid the same night they bought it. If you're coming specifically for fish, temper your expectations — this isn't a dedicated aquarium shop. But for the casual hobbyist picking up a tank or a few freshwater fish alongside their pet food haul, it's a convenient stop.
What keeps people coming back — some for 25 years — is the personal touch. A resident cat greets visitors at the door. The husband-and-wife owners know their inventory well and will steer you toward the right product rather than upsell you on something you don't need.
In a retail landscape dominated by Chewy boxes and PetSmart aisles, Capital Pet Food & Supply survives on relationships, honest pricing, and the kind of old-school service that's increasingly rare.

I have frequented this business many times over the last few years as it is close in proximity but I can’t any longer. This is the second time after purchasing (that I actually know of) that I’ve found small bugs crawling inside of the ziplocked bag of dog treats that are located off to the side of the register/desk. The first time my treats were almost gone before I discovered the bugs so I didn’t want to point blame without knowing for certain, as the bags are cheaply made and won’t close after while. There’s no telling if my dog had consumed any bugs previously but this can’t be healthy. I had no idea where the bugs came from originally and simply went to the store this evening being naive and purchased more without properly inspecting because I was in a rush and the store was closing. When I got home it dawned on me to check the bag and there they were again. Now I know for a fact where the source of bugs originated. I now wonder if any of the infections my dogs had originated from infested treats. I should have taken a picture but I instantly threw the bag away in my outside trash bin. Disgusting 🤮

I was here today to get some dog food and I managed to get it really quick. There was a lady with curly hair, I didn't get her name, that was really helpful.
