About
Aquarium Adventure is a destination-scale aquarium store in Bolingbrook, IL, the kind of place fishkeepers will drive two-hour round trips from northwest Indiana to walk through. Tucked into a shopping center next to a Michael's, it pairs a sprawling fish department with small animals, but the aquatic life is the reason hobbyists keep coming back. The freshwater wall is the headliner — reviewers with 35 years in the hobby call it one of the best selections they've ever seen, full of rare and hard-to-find species you simply won't spot at a chain.
One visitor even caught a specialist feeding the archerfish mid-tour. If you're hunting uncommon freshwater fish for sale in Bolingbrook, IL, this is the place to browse. There's a saltwater section too, with tangs, shrimp and starfish, though it's more limited than the freshwater side and coral runs pricey.
The live-plant and planted-tank selection earns its own dedicated trips, and shoppers regularly come in just for the hardscape — bulk aquascaping rock at a range of price points that even budget-minded reviewers call a genuinely good buy. Axolotls, an impressive food wall stocked with Hikari in every variety plus Bug Bites, Marineland tanks, filter media and supplies round out the floor. Staff knowledge is the through-line review after review.
Beth gets named repeatedly for patiently walking newcomers through their first planted tank and inspecting plants for hitchhikers; Xavier goes deep on water chemistry; Chris, Brian, AJ and Alana all earn shout-outs for honest, unhurried help. First-timers describe leaving with a real plan instead of a sales pitch, and many sign up for the year-long membership for the discounts. 5x — and the shop can get busy enough that tanks deserve a careful look before you buy.
For Bolingbrook-area aquarists wanting rare freshwater fish, quality plants and staff who actually talk parameters, Aquarium Adventure is worth the trip.

“One of my favorite pet stores!”
— Lisa Fields5.05 days ago“Very nice store, nice employees. Alana was very nice and helpful!”
— Salvador No5.02 weeks ago“They don’t care that they are going to kill those baby axolotls. When I asked about why they housed them in a tank with gravel (that they will eat and become impacted), they said “well more customers can see them in the tank and if they were in the tanks on the side people would miss them.” Also, they are in the tank with multiple axolotls and they said if one of the axolotls gets bitten/or nipped they just remove it until the limb or gill regenerates. You’d rather sell sick axolotls to customers than treat them humanely. Disappointing and disgusting.”
— Ashley Howard1.03 weeks ago“Was excited to go here. Its really gone down hill over the years. Sad really. Everything is so over priced.”
— Michelle Gorel1.0a month ago“I always love this place”
— Ashley Marie5.0a month ago“This has been a staple stop for years. Years and years. We have gotten a little of everything for our various pets. My last trip was pretty special. In hopes to cheer my friend up, I recorded little clips and sang over them, yes, while in the store to cheer her up over a recovery of a surgery. Even one of the specialists fed rhe archerfish while I was there for some footage! Overall, a really nice place with unique offerings of fish and other aquatic life. It is worth the trip!”

— rip simpkins2.0a month ago“Nice selection of fish and pet supplies, however, I've never seen prices so high. The only thing I thought was a real good buy was the bulk rock for aquascaping. Every animal looked to be in great health. One of the best fish selections I've seen in 35 years of being in the hobby. I'll definitely be back for more rocks.”
