Tucked into a Honolulu shopping center where parking can be tricky, MastahBetta Fish Shop has built a devoted following across the Hawaiian Islands — and beyond — for its curated freshwater selection and genuine aloha-style customer service. Owner Josh has been a fixture of the store since its early days at Ohana Hale Marketplace, and his passion is evident in every tank. The shop's namesake bettas are a major draw, with top-line varieties that attract serious collectors and casual hobbyists alike, but the inventory runs deep: fancy goldfish for backyard ponds, green neon tetras, pygmy corydoras, and rare species that Josh personally sources and can special-order by request.
The live plant selection is equally impressive. Customers rave about the quality of crypts pulled from rockwool with massive root systems, along with cabomba, vallisneria, anubias, and bucephalandra when restocks hit. The store's active social media presence and website let customers track incoming shipments and reserve fish online — a huge convenience on an island where traffic from Mililani or Kapolei to town is no joke.
What sets MastahBetta apart from big-box pet stores is the care behind the operation. Josh and his team member Sigma build real relationships with customers, proactively reaching out when rare fish become available and providing honest guidance on tank setup, stocking, and pond building. One customer recounted how Josh double-bagged fancy goldfish with extra oxygen to last two days while they waited for a pond pump — the kind of thoughtful, personalized service that keeps people coming back.
The shop also ships throughout Hawaii and to the mainland, with careful packing and transparent communication. Neighbor island customers on Kauai, where freshwater fish stores are nonexistent, particularly appreciate the affordable shipping and healthy arrivals. Used tanks and budget-friendly filter systems round out the inventory for those building setups on a budget.
For Oahu's freshwater community, MastahBetta has become the local fish shop people actually want to support — and one that keeps getting better with each restock.

Thankful to have Mastah Betta! We don’t have a fish store on Kauai, well petco but those poor fish. Mastah Betta has cool fish I cant find and shipping is cheap. Super appreciate the fast and well done shipping. This is my 3rd order and wont be my last. If you’re on Oahu, go check em out! Mahalo Mastah 🤙🤙

I bought 2 green neon tetras and 3 pygmy corys on Saturday, Nov 8th and found them all dead this morning (Monday.) I did a water change right away and hope my other fishes are going to be okay. Back on Oct 5th, I bought 4 corys from the shop and I had a massive fish death. At that time I added sand to the tank so I assume the sand wasn't clean and poisoned the water. So I cleaned, tested, and waited until the tank is completely stable before I add more fishes. Now I have my doubt, maybe the corys aren't healthy to begin with... I'm worried I am going to get another massive fish death again.😔

The stores owner, Josh, is really knowledgeable about different fish and his products. Spontaneously took my son to this shop to look and ended up purchasing different kinds of fancy goldfish to fill the void of just putting our senior dog down earlier that day so we didn’t plan well nor have our pond quite ready with a pump. I explained this to Josh and he kindly double bagged our fish in an extra large bag with lots of O2 to last 2 days while we awaited our pump. Our fish lasted as long as he had promised in the bag. Since then we’ve been going to this shop regularly to purchase mainly fancy goldfish a little at a time to build our pond once again. When I have questions or doubts Josh is usually responsive and educates me on anything fish related. Nice to have a shop like this with good ol’ customer service as Mastah Betta!
