About
Tucked into a Honolulu shopping center where the parking takes a little patience to find, MastahBetta Fish Shop has earned a devoted local following for its deep freshwater selection and genuine aloha-style service. Owner Josh has been the heart of the shop since its early days at Ohana Hale Marketplace, and his hands-on passion shows in every tank. The store's namesake bettas are the headline draw — top-line betta varieties for sale in Honolulu, HI that pull in serious collectors and first-time keepers alike.
Regulars note the bettas are now kept in their own individual tanks with heaters and filters, part of an ongoing push to keep the livestock healthy and well cared for. The inventory runs far past bettas, though. Fancy goldfish are a steady favorite among Oahu pond keepers, alongside green neon tetras, pygmy corydoras, and the kind of rare, hard-to-find species Josh personally curates and can track down by request.
The live plant wall is a destination in its own right: hobbyists rave about crypts pulled from rockwool with massive, full root systems, plus cabomba, vallisneria, anubias, and bucephalandra when fresh restocks land. If you're hunting live aquarium plants near me, this is the Honolulu shop people happily drive across the island for. What sets MastahBetta apart from big-box pet stores is the care behind the counter.
Josh and his team build real relationships, offering honest, patient guidance on stocking, tank setup, and pond building — one regular had Josh map out a 75-gallon dream tank from scratch, while another had their aquarium aquascaped and still gets compliments on it months later. Budget-minded builders appreciate the used tanks and inexpensive filter systems that turn up on the shelves. For Oahu's freshwater community, this is the local fish store people genuinely want to support, and it keeps getting better with every restock.

Customer reviews
“10/10 fish shop plus Josh goes above and beyond to help his customers!!! He aquascaped our tank and we get compliments on it all the time! We are so lucky to have found this place and would recommend this company to anyone!!”
— Kacy Lorber5.02 weeks ago“Would recommend avoiding this place for awhile. Our first visit was fine. The second visit most of the Betta inventory was gone and there were many Bettas dead in their tanks. Most of the dead ones were dead and left for several days judging by the aquatic growth that had sprouted on them. Would recommend other stores in the area that treat their fish humanely.”
