## About

Tucked into Fort Collins, Alpine Koi and Reef is a store that reveals itself in layers. From the street it looks modest, but step inside and you'll find a sprawling operation that covers pond life, saltwater reef, and freshwater aquariums with genuine depth. Out back, butterfly koi cruise through outdoor display ponds alongside mini waterfalls — a destination in itself that regulars describe as one of the most enjoyable parts of any visit.

The koi selection is the store's calling card. They carry both domestic and Japanese koi, and reviewers consistently praise the vibrancy and health of the fish. Derek and other staff members walk customers through selections with care, and the outdoor pond area showcases some impressively large specimens. Pond owners in the Fort Collins area treat Alpine as their home base for everything from floating pond heaters and pumps to water hyacinths and water lilies, plus all the tubing and filtration needed for water features.

But the name says "Reef" for a reason. The saltwater side stocks a well-curated coral selection alongside crustaceans and reef fish, all kept in clean, well-maintained tanks. They even sell pre-cycled micro reef tanks for hobbyists looking to jump into the saltwater world. Staff member Jamie gets particular praise for deep saltwater knowledge.

Freshwater enthusiasts will find live plants, fire eels, loaches, and — notably — a strong freshwater shrimp selection that has earned a loyal following for variety and pricing. The plant inventory serves both aquarium and pond setups, making it a genuine crossover shop.

The staff leans heavily into education and guidance, especially for new pond owners navigating their first season. Spring visits are practically a ritual for local pond keepers restocking plants and browsing new arrivals. Dogs are welcome, and there are even resident pups on site you can visit. The intersection near the building can be tricky to navigate, but there's plenty of parking once you arrive.

> We’ve been here twice. They first time we purchased a plant and were talking about loaches. The employee mentioned a fire eel and said they were similar. We came back a second time and purchased the fire eel. The employee gave us no information on the fire eel, no care instructions, no question asking, nothing. When we got home and began researching fire eels they are absolutely not similar to loaches. Fire eels get massive and need different care. Our eel died within 24 hours, the store said they do not guarantee their fish, but they do care. Very frustrating that we were not given any information until after the eel died. The shop owner at Animal Attractions helped us and informed us more than Alpine did.
